Need advice on lenses

if im to shoot graduation photos:

group throwing caps in the air

7 rows of people on stairs about 2-4 per step

is this good enough? Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E or should i aim for a higher f stop like 8?
