Why aren’t more photographers uploading to Wikimedia Commons?
I’m curious what’s holding people back from using Wikimedia Commons as a platform for their artwork.
It functions as a free, distributed, long-term storage repository, and it’s backed by a nonprofit with a strong track record of keeping content accessible. On top of that, images there can get significant exposure through Wikipedia and related projects.
There’s also something appealing about contributing to a space that helps train models and systems that respect intellectual property and attribution, rather than scraping without consent. Plus, the structured metadata, tagging, and categorization tools are surprisingly powerful for making images discoverable in a meaningful way.
For me as a non-commercial artistic and scientific photographer, its a no brainer. I love seeing my photos show up in an obscure blog, a Buzzfeed article, or an educational Youtube video!
