Recs for editing

So I’m a few years out of practice and looking to get back into photography again. A lot has changed since I’ve last done this, and I’m curious what software people recommend for editing nowadays. Do you pay a monthly or yearly subscription?

Do y’all have a dedicated machine (laptop, PC, Mac?) for editing? Anything in particular you feel is a dealbreaker?
