Venture out on a moonless night, turn off your lights, and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. You may be rewarded with a mesmerizing glow emanating from these unique fungi. Captured in various exposures, these images reveal a fascinating interaction with little snails that seem drawn to the light. If you are out on a moonless night, around wet decaying wood, try turn off all lights, once your eyes have adjust to the darkness, see if you notice anything glowing.

These photos were taken at different exposures and recently tuned up in Lightroom.

I noticed some little snails crawling on some of them. Maybe the light attracts them? Anyone have any other bioluminescence encounters or know anything unique about these mushies?

  4. Same frame as #3 but with lights on.
    Interestingly, the snails seen on the mushrooms vanished with motion blur. Because they were constantly on the move during the low light 240 second exposure.
